Trim the Wick: Before lighting a candle, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch (about 0.6 centimeters). A shorter wick reduces smoke and soot, promotes an even burn, and prevents the flame from becoming too large or erratic.
Use the Right Holder: Place your candle in a heat-resistant candle holder that's sturdy and appropriate for the candles size. Make sure it's placed on a stable, flat surface away from drafts.
Allow the First Burn: When lighting a new candle, allow it to burn long enough to create a full melt pool across the surface. This helps prevent tunneling (when the candle burns down the center, leaving wax along the edges) in future burns.
Burn in Sessions: For most candles, aim for 1-3 hours of burn time at a time, depending on the candles size. This prevents overheating and extends the candles life.
Avoid Drafts: Keep candles away from drafty areas. Drafts can cause uneven burning, flickering and excess smoke. A drafty environment can also be a safety hazard.
Keep Away from Flammable Objects: This includes curtains, decorations, paper, or anything that can catch fire.
Candle Safety: Always supervise burning candles and keep them out of reach of children and pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Store Properly: Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Extreme heat can cause candles to melt or deform.
